GatewayJFK Shuttle powered by Dollaride Suspended January 1, 2023

As of January 1, 2023, the GatewayJFK Shuttle service that operated between Downtown Jamaica/LIRR transportation hub and the GatewayJFK District is suspended until further notice. Alternative options for supplemental transit services are being explored. All other supplemental services provided by GatewayJFK remain fully supported and unchanged.

The Dollaride/GatewayJFK partnership that created the GatewayJFK Shuttle service initially began in June 2020 with a grant from NYSERDA (New York State Energy and Research Development Authority) which was matched (in part) by GatewayJFK. Unfortunately, the service was hampered by low ridership and technology issues that prevented the Dollaride/GatewayJFK partnership from improving the reliability and functionality of the service for riders and drivers. To date, GatewayJFK has contributed over $250,000 to date towards developing and providing the GatewayJFK Shuttle service. Beyond the challenges that burdened the GatewayJFK Shuttle operations, its cost represented almost 60% of the budget, not sustainable without jeopardizing other GatewayJFK programming that support businesses and residents alike.

As a Business Improvement District (BID), GatewayJFK follows the legislative guidelines to provide supplemental services to benefit District members. With our government and community partners, GatewayJFK’s annual budget of $500,000 is put to work to foster a unique, vibrant, “off-airport” community with enhanced maintenance and public safety, effective advocacy and administration, technical and professional services for its members, and strategic capital improvements.

GatewayJFK Board and staff understand the importance of a shuttle service that connects to the Jamaica transportation hub to the GatewayJFK district, a Southeast Queens area considered a ’transit desert’ by the over 8,500 workers supporting the off- airport logistics industry, area residents and visitors. Moreover, GatewayJFK is very concerned with the proposed changes and negative impact represented by the current MTA Queens Bus Network Redesign Project.

GatewayJFK is currently exploring other options for supplemental transit services with area employers, governmental representatives, community members and District stakeholders. GatewayJFK continues its mission as a public-private partnership providing neighborhood services, improvements and advocacy for the District’s off- airport cargo community and all who live, work or visit the area.
